मनुष्य जन्माला येण्याचे कारणच स्वतःची ओळख करून घेणे होय. म्हणजे माझा जन्म कसा झाला व का झाला? स्वतःची ओळख झाल्यानंतर या सर्व प्रश्नांची उत्तर मनुष्याला मिळतात. पण स्वतःची ओळख कोण करून देणार? तर ती ओळख करून देणारे म्हणजेच आध्यात्मिक गुरू होय. आध्यात्मिक गुरूंची ओळख करण्यासाठी त्या गुरूंची काही लक्षण असतात. ती म्हणजे ज्यांनी स्वतःला ओळखले म्हणजेच ज्यांना स्वतःमधील आत्मस्वरूपाचे दर्शन झाले आहे, ज्यांनी पंचमहाभूतांना जाणले आहे, या सृष्टीत जगण्याचे कारण व कार्य ज्यांनी ओळखले आहे. ज्यांनी स्वतःच्या आत्म्याला जाणले आहे. अशा व्यक्तीला आध्यात्मिक गुरू म्हणतात. स्वतःमधील ऊर्जा ते इतरांना देऊन त्यांना आत्मस्वरूपाकडे पाठवून देतात. ज्या परमात्म्याने सृष्टी निर्माण केली आहे त्या परमात्म्याचे दर्शन आध्यात्मिक गुरूंना झालेले असते. अशा गुरूंना चालु जन्मानंतर जन्म व मरण ही बंधने नसतात. अशा गुरूंकडून अनुग्रहीत होण्यासाठी प्रथम त्यांना शरण जावे लागते. त्यांना शरण गेल्यानंतर ते त्यांच्यातील ऊर्जा शिष्याला नामरूपाने देतात त्याला बीजमंत्र किंवा नाम असे म्हणतात. हि क्रिया शिष्याला देत असताना गुरूंमधील ऊर्जा व शिष्यामधील ऊर्जा यांचा संपर्क होतो व शिष्याचा आत्मउध्दाराचा मार्ग चालु होतो. नियमित नामजप व ध्यान धारणा केली असता शिष्य ज्ञानाकडे वाटचाल करतो.
गुरूंशिवाय ज्ञानाप्राप्ती होणे कठीण आहे. ज्ञानाविषयी कितीही वाचन केले किंवा इतरांकडून श्रवण केले, माहीती मिळवली तरीही समाधान मिळत नाही. कारण ख-या ज्ञानाची वाटचाल सुरू केल्यानंतर शिष्य आंतरीक शांतीचा अनुभव घेऊ लागतो व समाधानी होऊ लागतो. सृष्टीमधील अनेक गोष्टींचे ज्ञान जरी मनुष्याला झाले तरी स्वतःच्या अंतरंगाचे ज्ञान जोपर्यंत होत नाही तोपर्यंत त्याला पूर्णत्वाचा आनंद मिळत नाही. जीवनात आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान नसेल तर अपूरेपणा असतो, मन सतत काहीतरी शोध घेण्याच्या मागे असते. पण गुरूंची प्राप्ती झाली कि हे सर्व थांबते व निस्सिम शांतीकडे जीवनाची वाटचाल होते.

Prime reason behind human birth is to identify ourselves. After self realization, we get answers to questions like what is the reason behind my birth. But who can make this possible? The answer is spiritual master i.e. Guru. Now how to identify real Guru? Guru is the one, who has realized self; who has taken divine experience of Atma-Swaroop Darshan (Soul realization); who has knowledge of five elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Wind & Sky); who knows the reason behind birth and motive of life. These are unique qualities of Guru. Almighty God is the creator of nature and Guru has experienced auspicious sight (Darshan) of Almighty. He is free from bonds of birth & death (Mukti). To take Anugraha (initiation) from such Gurudeo, one needs to surrender completely towards him. After this Guru transfers his energy in the form of Naam or Beej-Mantra to disciple (Shishya). During this process, contact between shishya's & Guru's energy takes place which helps in spiritual awakening of disciple. After that daily Sadhana practice gradually forwards Shishya towards self realization and finally towards the Almighty.
Getting spiritual knowledge without Guru is difficult. If we read spiritual books, listen discourse from someone, that doesn't gives us much satisfaction. When we start following the path of Gurudeo i.e. the path of divine spirituality, we get contentment from inner side. Such experience cannot be taken from anywhere else. Even if we have knowledge of various things and facts in the nature it cannot give us eternal peace. This eternal peace results only from study of self realization (Study of own). Life remains incomplete without this spiritual knowledge because our mind is always engaged in finding something. In such condition if one is blessed with Guru, then all the search and confusion of mind stops and one becomes stable. Life becomes contented and happier.
